Reiki Healing: Is it For Real and Does It Actually Work?
You’ve heard of Reiki—maybe someone suggested it as a form of healing therapy, but you’re not sure what it is or where to start.
Perhaps you’re just curious and wondering, “Is Reiki for real? Does Reiki actually work?”
I’ve had those questions too.
My first Reiki session was in 2004, combined with a massage. I had absolutely nooo idea what it was or how it worked.
But one thing I was sure of, I could feel the energy moving through me.
In 2013, I developed an autoimmune disease, and I had the intuition that I needed to learn Reiki to use it on myself—and it worked.
I’m Tricia, an energy healer and Reiki Master. I specialize in helping people who are struggling with anxiety, autoimmune conditions, fatigue, allergies, and addiction.
My work focuses on guiding clients toward balance and healing by addressing the root causes of their challenges through the powerful energy of Reiki.
If you’re here today, reading this, there is something telling me that you might be curious about learning more about Reiki…
Let’s dive into this!
What is Reiki and How Does It Work?
Let’s start with the history of Reiki.
The Reiki healing technique was founded by Mikao Usui in the early 1920s. It was brought to the Western world by Hawayo Hiromi Takata, and it quickly became popular in the United States.
Reiki is an energy healing practice that involves connecting to the source of life force energy (known as chi) and transferring it to the body through the hands.
The Reiki master (a practitioner trained in Reiki) channels the “universal life force energy” to the person receiving it, promoting healing, balance, and harmony of the body, mind, and spirit.
This ancient practice comes from the belief that an unseen life force energy flows through our bodies and it is because of this energy that we are alive.
If your life force energy is low, you are more likely to get sick or feel stressed. If it’s high, you have a better chance of being happy and healthy.
The Guiding Five Reiki Principles
When we are taught about Reiki, we learn these five principles, which I still use to this day, every day:
Just for today:
- I will let go of anger.
- I will let go of worry.
- I will honour my parents, teachers, and elders.
- I will do my work honestly.
- I will show gratitude to every living thing.
These principles serve as a foundation for Reiki practice, helping us to live mindfully and with intention.
They encourage us to cultivate a peaceful and harmonious life by focusing on the present moment and fostering positive attitudes and behaviors.
The Benefits of Reiki
There are multiple benefits of Reiki, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual.
Reiki can help release stuck energy, remove blockages from the body, and restore positive energy flow.
When I place my hands on my client’s body, I allow the energy to flow, stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities.
By balancing the body’s energy, Reiki helps create an optimal environment for healing and overall wellness.
Physical Health Benefits
When our body is in pain, it often means that there is stuck energy in the body, either from past traumas or injuries.
When your body’s energy is not flowing well, it can cause dis-ease and discomfort.
Reiki has been shown to help with:
- Getting your body’s energy get back in balance
- Reducing pain from long-term conditions or injuries
- Strengthening your immune system to fight off illnesses
- Speeding up recovery after surgery or medical treatments
- Helping with symptoms of fibromyalgia and lupus
By helping the flow of energy in the body, Reiki helps to address the root causes of pain and imbalance.
Emotional and Mental Health Benefits
A lot of my clients have told me that after a Reiki session, they feel more relaxed, grounded, and at ease, like they just spent the day at the spa.
A Reiki session can help reduce symptoms of burnout and has been shown to lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone) in your body.
Reiki can help with:
- Improving sleep quality, leading to less fatigue
- Reducing anxiety and depression
- Increasing mental clarity
- Promoting overall well-being
This holistic approach helps create a sense of peace and relaxation, making it easier to manage stress and emotional challenges.
Spiritual Benefits
Reiki is a form of energy healing that goes beyond surface-level healing, addressing subtle energy and the unconscious mind.
After a session, many people feel a renewed sense of purpose and meaning in their lives.
Reiki can:
- Enhance self-awareness
- Promote personal growth
- Help you feel more connected to your life’s purpose
I truly believe that giving Reiki to your body is an act of self-love, nurturing your spiritual well-being and fostering a deeper connection with yourself.
I’ve seen over and over how Reiki does so much more than just easing my clients’ symptoms; it truly helps to unblock and reveal what their body has been trying to tell them over the years.
Common Misconceptions About Reiki
Myth #1: Reiki is Just a Placebo Effect
One of the most common misconceptions is that Reiki is just a placebo effect.
Some people believe that if it works, it’s just your mind convincing you that it works.
However, whether you believe in it or not, the life force energy still does its work.
Reiki may not be a physical thing, but you can certainly feel its effects if you focus on it.
Even skeptics have reported feeling calmer and more at ease after a session, which tells us that Reiki’s benefits are not about believing in it.
Myth #2: Reiki is a Cult or a Religion
Another common misconception is that Reiki is a religion or part of a cult.
Reiki is not a religion — it’s spiritual and goes beyond any specific beliefs.
You don’t have to believe in anything specific for Reiki to work; Reiki is simply all about energy and that’s the beauty of it.
This practice doesn’t involve worship, rituals, or adherence to a particular doctrine.
Instead, it focuses on the natural flow of energy within and around us.
Because Reiki is not tied to any religion or belief system, people from all backgrounds and faiths can benefit from it.
Myth #3: Reiki is a Cure-All
Reiki cannot cure everything.
Reiki is a tool you can use to help manage your symptoms, but it will not necessarily heal the underlying cause of a condition.
Curing a health condition typically involves addressing a physical cause, whereas Reiki focuses on balancing your energy and alleviating blockages.
For Reiki to be effective in easing your symptoms, you need to actively participate in your healing process.
For example, if someone suffers from gut issues due to a diet of fast food and junk food, relying only on Reiki to ease the symptoms is not realistic.
What to Expect During a Reiki Session
Once I get to know a bit more about you, we’ll begin the Reiki session.
You’ll be comfortably lying on my table, surrounded by soft, relaxing music—or silence, if you prefer.
All you need to do is close your eyes, let go, and allow the soothing energy of Reiki to work its magic.
At first, you might have all sorts of thoughts running through your mind.
Don’t try to force yourself to relax; let the Reiki energy naturally relax you.
As the session progresses, you will likely feel more at ease.
Here are some feelings and experiences that are normal during a Reiki session:
- Physical sensations: You might feel heat, vibrations, or tingling sensations. This means you are feeling the energy passing through your body.
- Visual experiences: You might see colours, visions, or images. This can be a part of your body processing the energy.
- Auditory experiences: You might hear things, some clear and others more subtle. These can be part of the energy work happening.
- Emotional release: You might feel emotions come up. This is normal, and it’s important to allow yourself to feel and express them. Some people cry during the session, which is a positive sign that blocked energy is moving.
- No immediate sensations: Some people don’t feel or see anything at all during their first few sessions, and that’s perfectly okay. Everyone’s experience with Reiki is unique and unfolds in its own time.
Understanding these possibilities can help you enter your Reiki session with an open mind, ready to receive whatever your body and spirit need at that moment.
Trust the process and allow the energy to work in its own way.
What Happens After the Session?
After the Reiki healing session, you might feel more relaxed and refreshed or even more tired than usual.
This is not a bad thing; it’s your body’s natural healing response.
Some of my clients report having greater mental clarity and a better night’s sleep after the session.
Once the session is over, we will discuss how it went.
I will explain what I felt, saw, and heard during the session, and you are welcome to share your experiences as well.
This feedback helps you understand the energy shifts that occurred and provides insight into your healing process.
In the days following the session, you might feel a range of sensations.
Some people feel more energetic, while others might feel more tired.
Both responses are completely normal as the Reiki energy continues to work in your body.
Give yourself some time to relax and allow the energy to integrate fully.
Listen to your body and take care of yourself by staying hydrated, eating nourishing foods, and getting plenty of rest.
This will help support the healing process initiated by the Reiki session.
