Holistic Healing: Calgary, Here’s Why to Choose It
Holistic healing is best defined as healing of the whole self—physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual healing. Holistic healing modalities take the entire individual into account because they see each symptom as part of the larger picture and recognize that treating one symptom will not cure the root of the problem.
Human beings are incredibly complex creatures. We start as a cell and spend nine months in the relative peace of the womb. I say relative because we are connected to our mothers and feel what they feel. So if they are anxious, we feel anxiety. If they are depressed, we feel that. If they do not want us, we get that loud and clear. We also hear what is going on outside the womb. If we are lucky, those sounds are comforting. If we are not, they are frightening.
Before we turn seven years old, much of our belief system is ingrained in our subconscious. Most of us were often punished as small children as our parents attempted to teach us right from wrong. The vulnerable child may take this punishment very harshly because she blames herself.
She wishes she could do better, be better, and may, by the time she is seven, believe at her core that there is something wrong with her. Many of us are walking around with very negative core beliefs about ourselves that would surprise us if they came to the surface.
As our lives continue, all sorts of factors shape us. We suffer all kinds of wounds that we don’t deal with on the emotional level. Those wounds impact us on other levels and can turn into physical symptoms.
Holistic Healing Takes Complex You Into Account
When you go to a doctor for a headache, the doctor may prescribe something to take the pain away. But what was the cause of the pain in the first place? Why was the pain there? Is it being caused by something in your environment? In your physical body? Is it an emotion that you’ve been avoiding feeling?
These are the questions that are asked in holistic healing. Those engaged in holistic healing are treating the whole person, not just the symptom. This is important because treating symptoms is actually killing us.
Here is how physical symptoms work:
The mind is believing a false belief and as a result, an emotion is trapped in the body.
For example, I had the false belief that I am a bad person. As a result, shame was trapped in my solar plexus. I ignored my body’s attempts to get me to see there was a problem. (Why am I drinking so much? Because life’s stressful and I’m always anxious. Why am I always anxious? Because life’s stressful and I’m always anxious. Uh huh.)
The body, hurt by the emotion it is carrying, creates a physical issue severe enough to get your attention.
By the time I was 40, I had developed a severe digestive disorder and panic attacks. I had grown to dislike allopathic doctors as I’d had several experiences of feeling judged by them and I hadn’t found them very helpful. I was actually willing to live with the digestive symptoms but the panic attacks drove me to the homeopath.
Had I seen a western medical doctor, I would have likely been diagnosed with histamine intolerance (an allergy to the histamine in foods) and told there was nothing I could do about it but eat a low-histamine diet for the rest of my life. Had I done that, I would not have encountered and felt the shame in my body, nor would I have given my mind the opportunity to release the belief that I am a bad person. The body would have had to develop an even worse symptom in its attempts to get me to heal what was hurting.
Complex you needs to be taken into account when dealing with physical symptoms. This doesn’t mean medical doctors cannot help you. They can help on a physical level and some may be able to help on other levels too. But in most cases, they are just a piece of the puzzle. Holistic healing allows you to heal not just the symptom, but the root of the problem. It really allows you to heal your whole life!
